Synergistic Engineering Environment

The Synergistic Engineering Environment (SEE) is a visualization and analysis environment for spacecraft and space mission design and planning. The SEE has been and continues to be developed to fuse analytical data and geometric data within a virtual environment to provide additional insight into spacecraft and space mission designs. This insight is gained through the exploration of the simulation data both in time and space. The SEE was developed to support the needs of engineers and scientists who are working on problems where the amount of data needed to fully understand the problem crosses multiple engineering domains, such as orbital mechanics, astrodynamics, rigid body dynamics, kinematics, thermal analysis, structural mechanics, proximity operations, mission planning, power analysis, trajectory optimization, communications analysis, and computer aided design. The SEE has a unique ability to effectively simulate events ranging from millisecond bursts of a thruster firing to the long duration flight of a spacecraft to an outer planet. This concept of navigating a large range of data is also present in its unique double precision mathematics capable of providing physical navigation within the entire solar system, down to centimeters. These capabilities combined with the SEE's ability to import spacecraft design models, add mission specific operations planning, and analyze the results, provides a unique analysis and visualization environment.

The SEE has been used to evaluate concepts and active mission plans through the effective use of virtual environment simulation. The SEE has supported a large group of projects, programs, and missions. These include:

Advanced Engineering Environment

AMA has developed an integrated software system deployable across NASA Centers nationwide called the Advanced Engineering Environment (AEE). The AEE provides secure access to and operability with design analysis tools. AEE has been tailored to serve as a web-accessible resource for all systems engineering functions.

This powerful engineering tool is driven by a software architecture that is independent of the design tools. AEE software architecture uses key common off the shelf technologies: PTC Windchill (for product and data management) Phoenix Integration ModelCenter (tool execution environment, trade study analysis) and web based technologies (data analysis and presentation). XML is a core technology used for data capture and as a data transfer protocol. The PDM work took the PTC Windchill product and extended it to perform architecture and technology assessments. It provided configuration management, traceability and repeatability in a secure, distributed environment

The Data Presentation work presented the results in a wide variety of formats including text reports, 2D graphs and charts, and 3D immersive environments

VRSTS is AMA's 3D visualization solution for AEE. VRSTS provides extensive capabilities for visualizing spacecraft geometry, trajectory and surface data. These

capabilities include 3D geometry and trajectory rendering, time animation along a trajectory, surface data mapping and exploration, cutting planes, 2D variable plots and time history plots.

eXtensible Design Environment

AMA has developed a data modeling, exploration, and visualization tool known as XDE (eXtensible Data Environment). XDE is capable of exploring many different types of data by using an extensible plug-in based architecture. These data types include XML, CSV, OWL, local file systems, and even remote systems such as a Windchill 7 PDM system. XDE also has many advanced visualization capabilities with many different layout algorithms and powerful user-built filtering capabilities.

eXtensible environment for Data Connectivity

XDC is a connectivity tool that can be used to manage, explore, and transfer data quickly and easily between drastically different and disparate systems. XDC's modular and extensible plug-in based architecture allows it to handle multiple systems including the local file system, a Windchill 6 or 7 PDM system, and a SharePoint 2003 or 2007 repository; all with a single, unified, explorer-like interface. Its drag-and-drop capability makes it simple to transfer data across very different systems while masking the complexities that result from differing data models.
